elii, named after its founder L. Cornelius Sulla,but it is mentioned by Paulus Diaconus, the Lombard historianof the period of Charlemagne, as Imolae. The town was incorporatedwith the States of the Church by Pope Julius II. in 1509. Imolawas the birthplace of St. Petrus Chrysologus, archbishop of Ravenna(d. 449), whose tomb is in the cathedral of S. Cassiano; and of thepainter Innocenzo da Imola (Francucci, b. about 1494, d. 1550;p. 344). — The train then crosses the Santerno. 26 M. Castel-Bolognese (poor restaurant), an ancient strongholdof the Bolognese, constructed in 1380, where the Florentines uuderNiccolo da Tolentino and Gattamelata were defeated by the Mi-lanese under Piceinino in 1434. — Hence to Faenza, see p. 373.
