Summary
[edit]DescriptionIstanbul St John's Armenian Church in 2015 5282.jpg |
English: St. John’s Church. This church was originally built of timber in Sarayiçi, Gedikpaşa and inaugurated by Patriarch Stephen Zakarian III on 6 December 1827. On 18 December 1849 it burned down. On 13 June 1871 Sultan Abdülaziz gave permission for its reconstruction and on 27 June 1876 a new church was opened. It was later repaired and re-opened on 26 March 1895. It later fell into disrepair, was repaired, but suffered from another fire. Two repairs later we are in 1986 with a retiled, repainted and replastered church, reopened by Patriarch Shnork Kalusdian in a magnificent ceremony.
A problem with this church is that it is in Gedikpasha, a neighbourhood that has two Armenian churches, a Protestant Evangelical) one and one Orthodox / Apostolical. I had great trouble keeping the two apart, in particular because other people mixed them up. This one is also called Gedikpaşa Surp Hovhannes Yegeğetsi, is part of the Orthodox church and its address is Fatih, Şehsuvar Bey Mah., Sarayiçi Sokak 3. |
