Title |
Iron Age enamelled mount |
||
Description |
English: A cast bronze mount with enamelled surfaces of late Iron Age or Roman date.
In plan, the mount is roughly heart-shaped, but lacking an angular tip, instead having a regular semi-circular shape. The mount consists of a pelta-shaped panel with two circles resting above the concave 'wings' of the pelta. Each circle is raised slightly higher than the pelta panel. Each circle also has enamel set inside it, with four red rectangular cells arranged in a cross pattern and 4 yellow quarters and a small square in the centre. The pelta panel has a third circle of the same design in the centre with three cells to each side, two of which are red in colour and the third and largest in yellow. The three cells are designed to fit an imbrication motif. The reverse of the mount is undecorated, but has two worn rivets (3.5mm diameter) placed immediately behind the centre of the upper circles. Set in from the V-shaped groove of the upper lobes is a circular depression about 2mm in depth and 4mm in diameter. The side face of the upper lobes and V-shaped groove have traces of corrosion or a worn break. It is uncertain which, however, there is enough space that a loop could have joined the mount in this area. |
