English: Video provided by VOA's Mandarin Service shows pro-democracy protestors delivering supplies such as umbrellas and water bottles on a human assembly line. Street protests spread throughout Hong Kong Tuesday, which marked China's National Day.
Marking Beijing's 70th birthday, a symbolic 70-gun salute kicked off a parade showcasing China's newest military capabilities, including a new intercontinental ballistic missile analysts say can carry multiple nuclear warheads over several thousand kilometers. Decked out in a gray suit in the style made famous by Party chairman Mao Zedong, Party general secretary Xi Jinping was joined by Premier Li Keqiang and other party officials as hundreds of troops marched throughout Tiananmen Square, where Mao declared the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. In a speech carried live on national television, Paramount leader Xi Jinping declared that "no force" can shake the foundation of China, nor stop the progress of the Chinese people. Xi also said Beijing would remain committed to the "one country, two systems" strategy for Hong Kong, where violent clashes broke out once again between police and pro-democracy demonstrators. https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-pacific/china-marks-70-years-communist-party-rule-violent-clashes-erupt-hong-kong |
