English: Side panel 2, Kirkham Chantry Screen, late 15th c., Church of St John The Baptist, Paignton, Devon. Relief sculpture in stone depicting the Holy Family with St Anne and St Joachim Before the Eternal Glory. (see: Pevsner, Nikolaus & Cherry, Bridget, The Buildings of England: Devon, London, 2004, p.838) Holy Ghost above, in form of a dove with wings expanded, within a sunburst. Behind it is depicted a triptych or wooden screen (perhaps the back of a throne) on which are two rows of Gothic shaped arched frames. Above are three figures, an angel on either side of the central figure, a bishop wearing the pallium. |
