Written by Allen Haigh (1862-1942) and published in 1911 by the Co-operative Wholesale Society's Printing Works in Manchester.

The Author

Allen Haigh served as the General Manager of the Cooperative Stores in Meltham in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

He was most likely born on 9 August 1862, the son of slubber James Sheperd Haigh of Paddock and his wife Jane, and was baptised at Huddersfield Parish Church on 28 December 1862.

He married Flora Broome (c.1864-1930), daughter of Elizabeth Broome, in 1888 and they had two known sons:

  • Arnold Haigh (1890-1961)
  • Stanley Haigh (c.1899-1987)

By the time of the 1891 Census, he was working as a grocer’s manager and living on Nab Croft Lane, Lockwood. Within a year, he had become the General Manager of the Co-operative Stores in Meltham, following the resignation of John Yearsley.

He remained in the post at Meltham for at least 20 years, writing this book to celebrate the jubilee year of the society.

Allen Haigh of 313 Leeds Road, Huddersfield, died 4 March 1942 at the Nursing Home on Trinity Street, Huddersfield. Probate was granted to his two sons, draughtsman Arnold Haigh and confectioner Stanley Haigh.

Copyright Status

The author of this work, Allen Haigh, died on 4 March 1942 and therefore copyright on his works expired at the end of 2012.

The photographs in the book are not credited to a photographer and it is assumed that they are no longer protected by copyright as the book was published over 70 years ago.
