Summary

Description
English: Here be clouds Which appeared from nowhere and so close you could almost touch them. The flat plateau is not natural, it was landscaped after the open cast coal mining operation of the 1980s ceased.

Bill Gracie in his 'History of Banton' (pub.1995; by Banton and Kelvinhead Community Council) remarked:

"In the mid 1960s, a large scale open cast operation was started which, over a period of years, removed hundreds of thousands of tons of brown blaes for use in brick making from the west side of the glen (the "Biling Glen") above High Banton. In addition to the inconvenience of heavy lorries passing through the village at regular intervals the beauty of a fine glen was destroyed and the hillside left with ugly scars which nature will never quite disguise". He went on to say; "It is unfortunate that Stirling County Council did not give more consideration to the local environment when granting planning permission nor lay down stricter conditions over landscaping and general tidying up of the area once operations were complete."

Fifteen years since writing the above a visit to the glen will say he has been proved right.
