Description
An extremely experimental printmaker along the lines of Rembrandt, Seghers demonstrated that a great painter could expand the limits of a medium to suit his expressive needs. He created 54 etchings, but instead of producing standardized editions, he made each impression a unique and individualized work of art. He often printed on paper prepared with a colored ground or on cloth using various colored inks and then added translucent overlays of color. Cleveland’s etching is one of ten known impressions of the first state; another is nearby at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College.
