Correspondence from Henry Ruffner to John Torrey, dated 1837, asking if Torrey knows of "a young man of uncommon promise, & fond of the physical sciences" who might to fill the post of professor of chemistry at Washington College, Virginia. "Good chemists are rare in Virginia," Ruffner says, but "the spirit of education is beginning to advance in this country."
