Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hellifield railway station — in North Yorkshire, England.
  • Despite its rural location, Hellifield station was formerly a place of considerable importance, for the Midland Railway Scotch expresses, which travelled via Leeds and the Settle and Carlisle line, would stop here to interchange traffic from Lancashire which had arrived by the LYR line via Blackburn and Clitheroe.
  • Accordingly the Midland Railway provided lavish facilities here, of which the glass canopies with decorative wrought-iron support columns, incorporating the Midland Railway monogram, still survive. Threatened with closure in the 1980s, with the Settle and Carlisle line, Hellifield now seems to have an assured future, although there is now no regular service from Lancashire.
