Freshwater heliozoan feeding on small flagellated algae (probably Ochromonas spp.). The heliozoan traps prey with its long axopods that project from the cell. Entrapped cells are then pulled towards the center to be fully engulfed. The plate-like scales that surround the cell body have to be temporarily moved out of the way in the process. Numerous engulfed prey (green particles) are visible in the cell body. Date: 23 Aug 2011 Location: Small lake in Kent Ridge Park, Singapore. Water margin with vegetation, brown sediment with organic detritus. Tadpoles resting nearby. Microscope: Bright-field with closed condenser aperture. Camera: Nikon D7000 Collector: Brandon Seah Scale: Field of view is about 240 micrometers across. |
