Variety 3-P-3: Heath Counterfeit Detectors varied from edition to edition, and noted Numismatist Eric P. Newman, whose collection this particular Counterfeit Detector is from, developed a classification system to compare and describe their variety. This particular variety is described as follows: Same as Variety 3-P-2 except for: The recognition that renumbering mistakes had been made in Variety 3-P-2 and the remaining unchanged plates on hand forced another renumbering of some plates by writing new plate numbers over modified or old plate numbers in ink in the following manner: 7 over 8; 8 over 9; 9 over 10; 10 over 11; and 11 over 17; Remainders of plate 6 with state bank note designs were sometimes used in place of plate 6 with federal designs; Impressions from captured counterfeit face and back plates of the $50 United States Note dated March 10, 1862 (mentioned on page 14) are sometimes inserted instead of the $20 counterfeit Fourth National Bank Note of New York which is mentioned on pages 11 and 18 as being illustrated.
