Description
English: HOLY LAND Gerard de Jode, in Speculum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, 1578 Smith Collection, University of Southern Maine West is at the top. A detailed bird's-eye view of the walled city of Jerusalem to a contemporary pilgrim, with the Dome of the Rock on the former site of Solomon's Temple. The view is flanked by vignettes of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (above and to the right) and the Chapel of the Nativity in Bethlehem (to the left).
