Gurcharan Singh Kuka, one of the subas designated by Ram Singh Kuka, in elderly years, circa late 19th century

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gurcharan Singh Kuka [born Gurcharan Singh Virk], one of the subas designated by Ram Singh Kuka, in his elderly years, circa late 19th century.

Photograph of Gurcharan Singh Kuka, a former trooper in the army of Ranjit Singh. During the 1870's, he acted as an emissary between Namdhari Sikh leader, Ram Singh Kuka (who had been exiled by the British), and the Russian Empire. It was an attempt at stirring up support for an allied Sikh-Russian effort to thwart the British from the Punjab. He was one of the subas (governor or deputy) of Ram Singh. On his arrest in 1881 by the British, he was described as “Light complexion, large eyes, aquiline features, white beard and moustaches, height about 5 ft 11 inches, age 75 years...a fine and handsome specimen of a Sikh." He was released in 1886.

The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
