Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A very much stamp-like 5 Avos bogus issue appeared May 1867. Sold by S. Allan Taylor from Boston. Supposedly being engraved ‘proofs’ in various colors for the country’s first issue, the items depict a sailing ship in a harbor, with the inscription reading ‘GUATEMALA / (vignette) / CORREOS CINCO CENT’. This bogus stamp has been forged (lithographs). Taylor passed himself off as 'Don Alberto de Barrio' of Guatemala to the Holland Printing Company of Boston to persuade them to print the bogus 'first' issue of that country. His companion Lyford acted as 'Don Alberto's' interpreter for this. Samuel Allan Taylor (1838-1913) was one of the pioneers of stamp collecting in the U.S. and published the first North American stamp journal, "The Stamp Collector's Record." He was also a notorious producer of bogus stamps, known as 'the Master Grafter', and was the leader of the 'Boston Gang' of philatelic forgers.
