| Description |
English: Greenwich Plate 47 from George Cooke's 'Views in London and its Vicinity', completed in 1834, looking broadly west across the Greenwich Hospital frontage from off the George Tavern (replaced in 1837 by the Trafalgar Tavern). This is not visible, as it is forexample in George Chambers' 1835 oil view from almost exactly the same point (BHC1823). The crane on the wharf at the east end of the Five Foot Walk is visible but in an earlier form than that shown by both Chambers and a drawing of 1827 by E. W. Cooke (the engraver's son) now in the Guildhall Collection, London ( cat. no. p5374544). There is a considerable amount of rafted floating timber in the left foreground, a large press of shipping shown in the river, many Greenwich Pensioners and others crowding the Five-Foot Walk, and the Hospital Governor's flag (Admiral Sir Richard Keats at this time) flies over his residence at the north end of the King Charles Court. This example bears the final 'Greenwich' caption, as does PAD2229, another copy. PAD2230 (see for photo) is a proof before letter with a temporary italic caption on the plate border. |
