Description
English: Giuseppe Gioachino Belli was a roman poet who lived in Rome in the first half of the 19th century. At his time, Rome was under the roman catholic pope. He is the first who dared to write poems in the roman dialect which was - and is still - particularly coarse and direct.

In this sonnet, Lo stroligo (The 'strologer), the poet is speaking from the point of view of a wise astroleger who is asking himself why people prefer to look down at the earth instead of looking up at the sky ...

Sonnet 1193. The 'strologer

Walk on a road, where somebody
is digging up the earth, and you
will see that nobody can pass by
without getting closer and watching down.

Whence this huge interest?
Isn't all as above as below?
What do people hope to find there?
Do they expect to find Belzebub's ravine?

But this is what I really don't understand:
although there's nothing to see
they open their eyes wide, and remain there.

The world, I see, is much more idiot than me,
I stay here on this balcony, and from here
I watch the stars in the sky, and all that is there
