Deutsch: Alkandros hatte früher noch eine andere Tochter gehabt, von der er stets geglaubt hatte, daß sie in einem Schiffbruch bei den Zykladen umgekommen sei. Diese Tochter war seinerzeit gerettet und durch Lisimachos aufgenommen worden. Es ist Sappho. Nachdem der verhängnisvolle Urteilsspruch gefallen, enthüllt Lisimachos das Geheimnis, das die Persönlichkeit Sapphos umgibt und Alkandros erkennt in ihr die verloren geglaubte und nunmehr durch den göttlichen Willen wirklich für ihn verlorene Tochter. Dergestalt findet sein Rachedurst die verdiente Strafe. Sappho möchte das Glück ihrer Schwester Klimene und Phaons befestigen und ermahnt sie daher, einander in Liebe anzuhangen. Darauf steigt sie zum Gipfel des Vorgebirges empor, von dem sie sich herabstürzen soll. Phaon will ihr grausames Geschick teilen, doch halten die Umstehenden ihn zurück. |
