Gilded panel (repoussé plaque) from Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded. Madho Das (popularly known as Banda Singh Bahadur) declares he is Guru Gobind Singh’s ‘Banda’ slave

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gilded panel (repoussé plaque) from Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded. Madho Das declares he is Guru Gobind Singh’s ‘Banda’ slave on the banks of the Godavari River in Nanded. Published in: 'In the Master's Presence: The Sikhs of Hazoor Sahib' (2008), by Nidar Singh Nihang, Parmjit Singh, London, Kashi House.

Rough translation and interpretation of the Gurmukhi inscriptions:

Top, starting from left - Chela (meaning 'disciple'), Chela, Madhodas Bairagi, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Patshah, Panj Piare (5 beloved ones; and they are numbered 1-5 in Gurmukhi numerals).

The text between Madhodas and Guru Gobind Singh reads "I am your Banda (meaning man)...." Rest is illegible.

Can't decipher the text that is in the lower-end (right of the middle).

Gurmukhi transcription:

Names from left to right:

The vertical inscription:

The text in the middle:

(Perhaps more accurately transcribed as: ਬੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਹ ਜਾਕੇ ਬਂਦੇਆ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ।)

Text below:

Text written vertically sideways on the right-side:

(Perhaps more accurately transcribed as: ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਕੁਟੀਆ)

Another attempt at deciphering the Gurmukhi inscriptions:

First one from the left says "Godavari to ashnaan kar ke aya tan guru ji nu plung par betha dekhya.

The middle one is not super clear but seems like it's saying "Hazoor da Banda haan. Banda hai tan ja ke bande vaale kam kar" (Gurmukhi:

After the formation of the institution of Panj Piare in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh appointed five Sikhs in Nanded to accompany Madho Das (popularly known as Banda Bairagi) on his northwards mission to conquer Sirhind in 1708. The names of these five Panj Piare were: Binod Singh, Kahan Singh, Baj Singh, Daya Singh, and Ram Singh. They are likely the five Panj Piare depicted on this plaque, however their positioning is unknown.
Date likely circa 19th or early 20th century
