1889 song about Edward Thonen, one of the miners who died at the Eureka Stockade
Summary
[edit]DescriptionGerman Teddy.flac |
English: On 15 July 1889, Lieselotte Schreiner from Germany sent a letter to New Zealand composer Alfred Hill, in which she included text and melody of the song "German Teddy". The origin of the song is unknown. Australian composer George Dreyfus called it a "traditional Australian folk song", although no trace of the song could be found in other collections.
The song is about Eduard Thönen (1827-1854), a miner from Elberfeld, Prussia, who was killed when soldiers stormed the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, Australia, on 3 December 1854. A detailed biography of Thönen, including more information about the song and links to sources, can be found in Edward Thonen: A forgotten Eureka Rebel. |
