English: Fort Monckton, Ryde in the distance, 1813 No. 54 of 73 (PAI0889 - PAI0961) Inscribed in the upper right corner 'Fort Monckton – Ryde in th/ distance/1813.' Fort Monckton is a bastion trace fort built on the coast at Gosport by 1783. It was named after the then Governor of Portsmouth, Robert Monckton, an officer in the British army. Its main period of use was during the Napoleonic War, when it was heavily armed. The view is looking south across the Solent to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. |
