Description
English: Rice differs from other major cereals. It is mainly produced by smallholders, often in the major consuming countries, and overwhelmingly in Asia. It is consequently managed nationally as a strategic commodity. As it is not traded as openly as, for example wheat, such actions as hoarding, precautionary purchases or panic buying, and prohibitions

on export can disproportionately affect price – as occurred between November 2007 and May 2008 when rice prices doubled. Some events on the rice price path are presented in

following figure
