1st Century AD. Bronze inlayed with silver. Pompeii, House of the Four Styles (Regio I.8.17). A feature frequently found in the city's richest banqueting halls is the chafing dish. The one from the House of the Four Styles presents a lid with a triton-shaped knob and dolphin-shaped handles. The central section has two doors and rhe head of a gorgon on top. Inside, a smaller compartment contained a combustion chamber with a small hatch. This chafing dish, the only one of its kind found in Pompeii, is highly sophisticated in its combination of functionality with aesthetic pleasure. Candelabra and oil lamps were used to light the triclinium as well as lamp-bearing statues of bronze, generally based on the same classical model of a youth with soft, flowing lines. The one on show here was altered by the addition of bunches of grapes on a vine. |
