| Description |
English: First Class Dining Saloon on the 'Omrah' (1899) Interior of the passenger liner 'Omrah' (1899) showing the First Class Dining Saloon, on the Upper Deck (a view along the centre line, looking towards the organ at the forward end). The Baroque-style Saloon was panelled in rosewood and mahogany, inlaid with patterns in satinwood and orangewood. The decorative scheme of the room incorporates Classical elements such as broken pediments above the windows, doric columns and winged putti heads. This photograph shows the well rising up to a glass dome on the Boat Deck. The cove around the bottom allowed more light to spread from above. Just visible are the electric fans (described as beeswing fans at the time) that replaced the punkahs (large fans consisting of a frame covered with canvas) previously used to circulate air in the interiors of vessels in the Australia trade. The organ was manufactured by the Estey Organ Company. |
