English: “My Dear Cousin
Thy very acceptable letter was duly received, thee must excuse me for not answering it before this as I have had so much business and pleasure to attend to that I have not had time.
The whole company of us and visitors went out to Clifton Springs a week ago Fifth day, there were only twenty one of us counting little George: we went in four carriages I drove Johnsons Grays and had the little ones of the party in Mary, Anna, Sarah [Inde] Sue & Self. Thy uncle Samuel drove Wolfs team; thy Father his blacks, B. Phillips & wife, old Dick so thee may be sure there was a few of us if not more we had [ ] sport and got home about eight in the evening all sober I believe there were only twenty one of us bear in mind. I have been up to Waterloo about three times a week since the girls came out it is so pleasant to be with them, they are such good company and such lovely girls From one of the letters received from Philadelphia a few days ago it seems thee had a visit from Sallie Truman it is real nice to have the girls run down to see thee in thy classic retirement. I had a fishing excursion last week but my success in ‘the noble art’ was exceedingly bad, the fish (unlike some of my friends) did not seem at all desirous that I should trouble them with a line. Has thee learned to swim yet I wish thee would get somebody to go with thee and teach thee the ‘modus operandi’ but do not go alone for thee might be drowned Will thee let me criticize thy spelling a little, not that I wish to find fault with thee my dear boy for thee writes a first rate letter, the chirography is good, the syntax not bad, and the orthography only a little careless, which I think thee can correct by a little bit more attention, try and see. I shall be in Philadelphia in tenth month if I live and then I will get a horse and drive out and see my cousin Richard and give him a sight of home-ly phiz. What books does thee read. In thy next give me an account of them, for I feel very much interested in thy well being; I am very glad to hear thee is getting along so well in thy studies, remember ‘That not enjoyment and not sorrow, is our destined end and way, But act that each to morrow Find us farther than to day’. Let thy motto like that of thy native state be ‘Excelsior’, and there is no fear of the result. Has thee read ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ yet; if not, get it and enjoy thyself over one of the best books ever written. The girls will return next second day, then we shall be dreadful lonely.
