English: Eyemouth memorial to the fishing disaster of 1881 A striking memorial in the old burial ground (now a garden) between High Street and Albert Road, to the 189 fishermen who lost their lives on 14th October 1881 at sea in a great storm. 129 men were from Eyemouth and it remains Scotland's worst ever fishing disaster. The inscription on the monument reads:-
ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION TO THE MEMORY OF 189 EAST COAST FISHERMEN OF WHICH 129 BELONGED TO EYEMOUTH WHO PERISHED AT SEA ON 14TH OCTOBER 1881 WHEN THOU PASSEST THROUGH THE WATERS I WILL BE WITH THEE |
