Excavation of mound on Tayasal Peninsula. Guatemala. 1923.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Photographer's caption: "Excavation of this mound on Tayasal Peninsula exposed two phases of construction by pre-conquest Maya. The cut stone on the bottom was probably a ceremonial altar. The rubble fill was likely intended to enlarge it. Internal strife very probably interrupted its completion. This site was excavated by Carl Guthe in 1922 for the Carnegie Institute of Washington. It is the only one in the area that has been excavated. Other than some small figurines no significant artifacts were found."
