Summary
[edit]DescriptionEdwardian House on Davenport Avenue, Hessle - geograph.org.uk - 1168322.jpg |
English: Edwardian House on Davenport Avenue, Hessle, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Pevsner says "Laid out c.1894; largely complete by 1905. It is a period piece, an enclave of middle-class villas and semi-detached houses exhibiting all the hallmarks of minor late Victorian and Edwardian suburban architecture. There are elements of Queen Anne, Jacobean and vernacular revival with half-timbered and tile-hung gables, renderings, pargetting, decorative friezes and bargeboards. Terracotta finials abound, including a pair of dragons. The influence of Voysey is less evident here than one would hope in the town where he was born. The best houses are towards the W end of Davenport Avenue. The three-storey semi-detached house with half-timbering, tile-hanging and excellent brickwork on the N side are largely by Brodrick, Lowther Walker.." |
