English: Marʉaweka--Today's lesson Part 2: asking and answering a question about where you're going. Here's the second answer from Friday's question!
Here we have the late Betty Cable Pete and the late Edith Kassanavoid Gordon asking and answering a question two times. This is from a video of conversational phrases the Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee produced. We thank them for all of their hard work over the years to get us on this road. Mrs. Pete asks: Hakapu ʉnʉ miayu? Mrs. Gordon answers: Sookʉ̠niku nʉ miarʉ. Hakapu ʉnʉ miayu? (Where are you going?) haka- (where-question word) -pu (to/to the direction of-postposition) ʉnʉ (you-subject pronoun) mia- (go (away from the speaker)-verb stem) -yu (progressive verb ending -- think "-ing") Sookʉ̠niku nʉ miarʉ. (I am going to Lawton.) Soo- (lots/many-combining form of the word) kʉ̠ni (kahni-house) ku (towards/to-postposition) nʉ (I-subject verb--notice it is in second position in the sentence) mia- (go-verb stem) -rʉ (generic verb ending/also -ing) Notice the ʉ in miarʉ is whispered both times by Mrs. Gordon. You might hear a speaker not whisper it too. Sookʉ̠ni can also refer to other towns as it means "many houses," but here Mrs. Gordon is talking about Lawton. You might also hear a speaker refer to Lawton as Totʉnʉ̠. So if you used this word you would say Totʉnʉ̠ku nʉ miarʉ. Listen carefully to the speakers and then... Listen, repeat, and practice! #LRP And remember the only way to do language wrong is to not do it at all! |
