| Description |
English: Dyke near Rubh'a' Mhàil A basalt dyke has resisted the sea for longer than the surrounding quartzites. Islay and Jura are covered in these linear features which originate in the volcanoes that once occupied central Mull as the Atlantic Ocean opened up.
Sometimes the material squeezed into the existing rock crystalised to form a more resistant rock giving a positive feature like this, in other cases it weathers more easily, and forms deep straight gorges. |
