Description |
English: Moll's map of Dorset Shire (Dorset), sold separately and as Map 5 in his A Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... Illustrations in the margins of the Maumbury Rings and various Romano-British statues—Venus (in the modest pose of a Venus Pudica), Jupiter Amun ("Iupiter Ammoñ" but actually either Jupiter Dolichenus or more probably Mithras the Rock-Born from the idol's Phrygian cap and pose), Neptune ("Neptunus"), Hercules, Vulcan ("Vulcanus"), Bacchus (probably actually Mercury from the idol's petasus), and an unnamed figure (possibly actually Bacchus)—from the Southbroom Hoard discovered near Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1714.
