Español: En este programa especial, Democracy Now! rompe el cerco mediático y se dirige al Sahara Occidental, en el noroeste de África, para documentar la lucha por la libertad que los saharauis llevan adelante desde hace décadas contra la represión violenta de Marruecos. Marruecos ocupó el territorio en 1975, sin respetar a la comunidad internacional ni a la ONU. Miles de personas que resistieron la ocupación marroquí fueron torturadas, detenidas, asesinadas y desaparecidas. Un muro de cerca de tres mil kilómetros divide a los saharauis que quedaron en la zona ocupada de los que huyeron al exilio. Los medios de comunicación internacionales en gran medida han ignorado la ocupación, en parte porque Marruecos siempre ha impedido que los periodistas ingresen al Sahara Occidental. Pero a fines del año 2016, un equipo de Democracy Now! pudo ingresar a la ciudad de El Aaiún, en el Sahara Occidental. Fue el primer equipo de noticias internacional en informar desde el territorio ocupado en años. |
