Nederlands: De regenten van het RasphuisOp de binnenplaats van het Rasphuis stond een beeld dat de bestraffing symboliseerde van de veroordeelde inwoners van dit tuchthuis. Eenzelfde verwijzing naar de ‘Castigatio’ ofwel ‘Bestraffing’, is te zien op de oude poort van het Rasphuis, nu een van de toegangen van het winkelcentrum Kalvertoren. Aan het eind van de 16de eeuw werd voor het eerst vrijheidsberoving als straf toegepast. De gevangenen moesten voor hun brood werken, onder andere door het raspen van Braziliaans verfhout. De stad Amsterdam had hierop het alleenrecht. Het zaagsel werd geleverd aan de verfindustrie om er rode verfstof uit te koken. Hiermee leverde het nieuwe strafstelsel de stad goedkope arbeidskrachten op. Het Tuchthuis werd, typisch voor de Hollandse koopmansgeest, tevens een winstgevend bedrijf.
