Nederlands: De overlieden van het ChirurgijnsgildeHonderd gulden per persoon betaalden de overlieden van het Chirurgijnsgilde voor dit schilderij. Doctor Willem Röell (1700–1775), afgebeeld op het portret in het portret, betaalde apart. Het afgebeelde gildebestuur was benoemd na een geruchtmakende corruptie-affaire. Het vorige college was afgetreden na gesjoemel met chirurgijnsdiploma’s en het weduwenfonds. Drie van hen zijn op het schilderij hierboven te zien. De enige die de zaak aan het licht had gebracht was Abraham Titsingh (1684–1776), hier geheel rechts. Samen met zijn vakbroeders getuigt hij van de onomkoopbaarheid van het nieuwe college. De oudste chirurgijn van de groep, Bartholomeus Vermeij (ca. 1663–1733), wijst veelbetekend op het diploma in zijn hand, terwijl Willem Monnikhoff (ca. 1677–1759) ons attendeert op de spreuk bij het portret van Röell: ‘VIGILATE JUSTE’, ofwel ‘Weest waakzaam en rechtvaardig’.
