Nederlands: Van alle professoren uit Leiden is Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) de bekendste Islamgeleerde. Minder bekend is dat juist hij de methode bedacht waarmee rond 1900 de koloniale oorlog in Atjeh zowat gewonnen werd. Dit was de bloedigste oorlog uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. In het actuele debat over het koloniale verleden hoort Leiden van zich te laten horen. Trots op de stad kan samengaan met een kritische houding van burgers: wat moeten we hiermee? Is het te lang geleden zodat het niks meer uitmaakt? Of voelen we een binding met de generaties voor ons? Wat betekent dat voor het Snouck Hurgronjehuis en de Snouck Hurgronjestraat?
Schrijfster en onderzoekster Vilan van de Loo duikt diep de archieven in. Begin 2019 publiceert ze op Sleutelstad.nl twaalf weken achter elkaar een column.
