Despite the increasing use of the car, the bicycle remains a popular means of transportation in the Netherlands. At the exhibition 'The Bicycle' at the museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the focus is on the bicycle and all its uses. SHOTS: cyclers and moped riders leave the ferry in Amsterdam; attendant cycles on a racing bicycle through the museum, with different bicycles in glass cases; African bicycle with a chain made of rope; several posters and photo's of bicycles; policeman puts two bikes in the shelter at the police station; breaking up bicycles into a little package by a machine; different works of art at the exhibition, a.o. sculptures and paintings; several odd bicycles, a.o. a water cycle; ARCHIVE FOOTAGE: batallion on bicycles of teh Dutch army; film footage of the Tour de France.
