Summary
[edit]DescriptionCross-section image of a photonic crystal membrane.tif |
English: This image in a cross-section of a polymer photonic crystal.
Photonic crystals are a type of nanostructure that reflect only specific wavelengths of light while allowing other wavelengths of light to propagate through. The crystal in the picture will reflect green light, specifically 530 nanometer light, while allowing other wavelengths of light through. Color from structures like this are referred to as structural color. Unlike pigments and dyes, structural color never fades or dulls. Structural color is the mechanism by which many insects and birds have bright iridescent colors. |
