| Description |
English: Corn Mill Site, Altan na Bradhan. The mill is situated on the outflow from Loch na Creige Leithe and is of the type known as a clack mill because of the sound they made. The mill race can be seen flowing from the bottom right hand corner and one of the several discarded millstones can be seen. It would have had quite a localised source of supply of corn. At least one other mill site in Clachtoll has been identified. The mills were controlled by the landowner and tenants were 'thirled' to a particular mill. This meant tenants had to use a certain mill and in return had to give a portion of their grain as payment. The mills fell into disuse sometime in the nineteenth century when a regular boat service was introduced into Lochinver. |
