Abstract: Print shows Marquis de Lafayette, full-length portrait, standing, facing front, wearing uniform and holding two swords in left hand while directing American troops during the battle at Yorktown; a black soldier holds his horse behind him on the right. Physical description: 1 print : engraving. Notes: Includes four lines of verse: L'Amérique étoit asservie, / Ce héros vint brifer ses fers; / Ses succès au dela des Mers / Présageoient ceux sa Patrie.; Title continues: Le Marquis de la Fayette, Maréchal de camp des armées du Roi, et commandant de la Garde Nationale Parisienne.; peint par L. le Paon peintre de Bataille de S.A.S. Mgr. le Prince de Condé ; gravé par N. le Mire des Academies Imperiales et Royales et de celle des Siences [sic] et Arts de Rouen et de Lille.; In the middle of the text a wreath encircles "Liberte" and a pole topped with a phrygian (or liberty) cap from which emanate rays of light.; Title from item. |
