English: An ad-hoc group of community members (most young, many of which were students, some members of various unions but most not) organized a Community Support Rally for Locked Out Postal Workers on Thursday June 16th in Halifax, bringing hundreds to the Halifax CUPW picket lines.
The spirited rally began with a number of speeches, which included CUPW Nova Local President Trevor Beckerson, community member Kaley Kennedy, Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council President Kyle Buott, and Dorothy - a member of CAW Local 2002 who had stood with her co-workers on their own picket line at the Halifax International Airport with her co-workers before CAW reached a tentative agreement with Air Canada, and who came with dozens of her fellow CAW members to join with the postal workers on their picket line as soon as the CAW / Air Canada settlement was announced. The rally was MC'd / hosted by community activist David Bush, who led the crowd in several chants. The King's University Alternative Food Co-operative Association provided an amazing barbeque meal for everyone present, with incredible and healthy kabobs and other treats. Rally attendees pledged to continue to support the postal workers in their struggle against not only an employer that is attacking their pensions & the wages and benefits of future generations of workers, but also the Harper Tory government which is moving rapidly towards removing their right to free and fair collective bargaining, including the right to strike (in violation of International Labour Organization Conventions). Community members committed to continuing to join CUPW picket lines throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality, and to attending a mass Support Rally for Locked Out CUPW Members on Saturday June 18th organized by the Halifax-Dartmouth and District Labour Council and the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour. As the speakers wound down, dance music came out over the sound system and folks enjoyed food prepared by Kings University students while talking with their neighbours (including those who normally deliver their mail to their doorstep). An Injury To One Is An Injury To All! Support the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW)! |
