Comb Ridge To Mule Ear Diatreme |
Description |
500px provided description: A Navajo guide, Louis, standing on Comb Ridge looking south toward the Mule Ear diatreme (volcanic pipe). Comb Ridge was formed by layers of rock pushed up and folding over a compression fault to the west, creating a monocline. Stream flow in Comb Wash to the west (right) eroded close to 1,000 feet of rock, carving the beautiful sandstone cliffs on Comb Ridge?s west side. Comb Ridge exposes strata going back to the Permian Period ~250 million years ago. Parts of Comb Ridge are included in the Bears Ears National Monument currently under threat.
