Codex Calixtinus (Liber Sancti Jacobi), f. 90, ms.2631, Biblioteca General Histórica de la Universidad de Salamanca Representa la aparición de Santiago en sueños a Carlomagno y la decisión de éste de acudir con sus tropas a la reconquista de la península para liberar del invasor musulmán el camino de Santiago. La miniatura se divide en tres registros que han de leerse de arriba hacia abajo. En la parte superior, Santiago se acerca al lecho de un dormido Carlomagno, acostado con su corona, y una cartela que cuelga del brazo del apóstol y une a ambos personajes se utiliza para comunicarle su deseo de que libere su patria de la dominación islámica. A la izquierda, fuera del recinto en que descansa Carlomagno, añade el miniaturista la matanza de cristianos a manos de los infieles, escena que le señala Santiago con su mano derecha. En los dos registros siguientes se representa la salida de Aquisgrán del propio Carlomagno rodeado de sus caballeros, y precedido de las tropas y de Roldán, que porta el estandarte del monarca, repetido al lado de Carlomagno.
