Summary
[edit]DescriptionClach Tholl - geograph.org.uk - 1529866.jpg |
English: Clach Tholl A great example of raised coastal scenery, indicating the history of sea levels in this area. During the most recent glacial period, until 12000 years ago, sea levels were much lower than at present, by up to 120m. This is due to water being locked up in ice caps and also a reduction in ocean temperatures causing the water to contract (fresh water has a density maximum at 4 degrees celsius but salt water continues to contract until it freezes). After the melting of the ice there was a rapid eustatic rise in sea levels, from 12000 to 7000 years ago. Sea levels have stayed relatively constant since then but there is still a gradual isostatic uplift of the land that was weighed down by the ice sheet so Scotland is currently rising. The cliffs and this sea arch would have been formed after 7000 years ago and before they were lifted clear of the water by the rising land. The foreground would once have been the wave cut platform at the base of the cliffs. |
