It was also to study thehabits of the strange tribes of Indians, and thenature of the country, its climate, soil, vegetableand mineral wealth, its mountains, volcanoes,lakes, and rivers, and the animals that roamedin its forests. The expedition was led by two officers bythe name of Lewis and Clarke, and loaded withpresents for the Indians, left St. Louis, whichwas then a small village, in May, 1804.
