Description
English: Chart of the Strait of Gibraltar constructed in 1786 by Brigadier don Vincent Tofino de San Miguel Director of the Spanish Naval Acadamies for Cadets to which have been added Ceuta and Tetuan Bays by J.F. Dessiou Master of the Royal Navy LondonSingle sheet. Engr. Scale: [ca.1:230 000]. Cartographic Note: Meridians of Greenwich and Cadiz. Contents Note: The position of the Battle of Trafalgar is marked on this chart by a crossed gun symbol captioned 'Nelson and Villeneuve 1805'. The fix might not be entirely accurate as the battle was not stationary but it serves its purpose as a patriotic memorial. Charts of this area used by British ships were based on surveys by French and Spanish hydrographers and the British Admiralty had only recently started publishing charts itself. Faden, Geographer to the King, was a commercial chart maker with access to official sources such as the surveys carried out by Joseph Foss Dessiou, a Royal Navy Master from Devon, updating the Spanish naval survey of the Straits of Gibraltar carried out by Tofino in 1786, Three views. Notes on currents. Statement of approval by the Chart Committee of the Admiralty.
