Summary
[edit]DescriptionChance Vought F4U Corsair at Hahnweide Air Show 2013.ogv |
English: For many, the Corsair is plainly THE World War II fighter. I'm not quite so sure, but I too think that the F4U is amongst the most impressive airplanes of its time. The sound of its Pratt & Whitney R-2800 18-cylinder radial engine and its typical looks with the inverted gull wings are surely enough to enthuse everyone who likes aircraft.
The Corsair featured in the video is a F4U-4. It was built in 1945 and didn't see action in WWII. Whether or not it was used in the Korean War is unknown, but it fought in the co-called Football War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_War) on the Honduran side. After Honduras replaced its F4Us with more advanced types, this plane was stored and in 1979 sold to private owners in the US, who re-sold it after only one year which marked the beginning of the plane's career as an air racer. In 1990 it was bought by Austrian pilot Siegfried Angerer, who taught Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz how to fly, which is why this plane, registered as OE-EAS, is now part of the Flying Bulls collection. |
