Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Castle Hill, Bransholme, Wawne, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Looking northeast across Holderness Drain. The motte at Bransholme (sometimes Brancholme) is thought to be the remains of a 12th century fortified manor house or timber castle. In 1353 John de Sutton was fined for "crenellating without Licence" here, and the brick foundations of a later (probably 17th century) house were uncovered on the site in 1918. The motte is described by some sources as "much destroyed by misuse" and a "shapeless earthwork with ditch" and the Ordnance Survey map of 1855 shows an "old sand pit" in the middle of the mound.
