Summary
[edit]DescriptionCanal and road across the Sence - geograph.org.uk - 1073626.jpg |
English: Canal and road across the Sence On the left the Ashby Canal crosses the River Sence by a heavily built aqueduct. To the right a lengthy former approach road (now private) to a railway station spans the river a little more gracefully. The latter was built by the Midland Railway to provide access to its Shackerstone station, now the northern termminus of the Battlefield Line preserved railway. In the background above the canal boats is the tower of Shackerstone church, showing that by Victorian standards the railway station was quite close to the village it purported to serve! Car-borne passengers of the 21st century intent on reaching the station must approach from north of the village and actually drive and park their vehicle along the abandoned railway line towards Ashby-de-la-Zouch. |
