re found, excavated by percolating waters chargedwith carbonic acid. There is a vast cavern near Columbia known asthe Crystal Palace Cave, and another near Cave City, El DoradoCounty, which has never been thoroughly explored. East of Columbia there was a hole in the limestone 250 feet deep,at the bottom of which was found a running stream, four feet wideand twelve feet deep. Another hole led into a stream which madeits outlet near Jamestown, eight miles below. At Gold Spring andSpringfield are remarkable springs supposed to be outlets of subter-ranean streams flowing through limestone fissures. Several distinctstrata of limestone exist, and it is said that one or more fossilencrinites have been discovered, but there is no indisputable evidenceto show the place of this deposit in geological history. It is undoubt-edly of deep-sea, marine origin, and shows distinct stratification andalternate layers of gray, blue, and white. As to the comparative age of the different deposits, it may be
