. Rosenheim Architect. C. Leonardt, Builder. HAMBURGER BUILDING, BROADWAY, HILL AND EIGHTH STREETS, LOS ANGELES. CALIFORNIA. That record is probably unmatchable in any city of the size of Los Angelesinside or outside of the United States. The figures are the more remarkable whenwe realize that this city is sought by thousands of persons of advanced age whocome here in order to live long and to see good days in spite of their advancedyears—blessings which they could not expect to enjoy in climates less favorable tohuman life. The aggregate death rate for the week is small, and it is importantto remember that not only the aged flock here to see good days, but those afflictedwith various diseases who know their term of life has but a span remaining andwho come here in hopes of suffering less than would be the case in climates rigorous, either from excessive cold or excessive heat, or from sudden changes and everyelement that makes it difficult for the weak to survive or live in comfort.

Dickenss St. Louis was a mere trading post. The business interests of thesettlement and the condition of society were somewhat analogous to those of Chey-enne or Julesberg some twenty years later, when the Union Pacific Railroad wasbeing pushed westward from the Missouri River toward the Pa
